The weekend’s shooting in Pennsylvania has left many Americans in shock, and for good reason. It’s not every day that a former president is targeted by an attempted assassin. However, for Donald Trump, the experience was not only shocking but also “very surreal.”
In his first interview since the incident, Trump sat down with the New York Post and recounted his experience. He revealed that the shot that hit him was so powerful that it knocked his shoes off. “The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight,” Trump said with a smile. It seems that even in the midst of a potential life-threatening situation, Trump’s sense of humor remains intact.
But despite the light-hearted moment, the former president also acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. He told reporters aboard his private plane that he “was supposed to be dead.”
The doctor at the hospital where Trump was treated for his injuries even called it a “miracle” that he was still alive. And Trump believes that miracle was due to him turning his head at just the right moment. “At that instant, what would have been a kill shot instead tore off a small piece of his ear and splattered blood on his forehead and cheek,” the Post reported.

But miraculously, Trump was still standing and even managed to insist on finishing his speech. Channeling his inner Teddy Roosevelt, Trump wanted to continue speaking despite the danger. However, the Secret Service wasn’t about to let him do that. Trump described them as “linebackers” who rushed him off stage and refused to let him continue.
And even after the all-clear was given, Trump couldn’t escape the force of the Secret Service agents. His shoes didn’t stay on for long, and he joked that usually, one has to die to get an iconic photo, but not for him.
The former president’s sense of humor and resilience in the face of danger is admirable. Despite being a target of an assassination attempt, he remains strong and determined to continue fighting. And it looks like that sentiment is shared by his supporters, with the iconic photo of Trump holding up his fist and mouthing “fight!” being described as “the most iconic photo” many have ever seen.

Trump also commended the job the Secret Service did in protecting him. Thanks to their swift and decisive actions, the shooter was taken out with just one shot. And for that, Trump is grateful.
In light of this recent attack, questions arise about how the situation even got to this point.
For Republicans, for Trump’s supporters, and for all Americans, the events of this weekend are truly “surreal.” But one thing is for sure, Donald Trump is not going down without a fight.
