In a dramatic incident highlighting the ongoing tensions at the US-Mexico border, Border Patrol agents were reported to have engaged in gunfire with members of a Mexican drug cartel. This confrontation occurred in Fronton, Texas, as the cartel attempted to smuggle a group of individuals illegally across the border. Fortunately, no injuries were reported on either side, and the attempt to cross the river was thwarted.

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, referencing multiple law enforcement sources, reported: “Per multiple law enforcement sources, within the last hour, Border Patrol agents near Fronton, TX were fired upon from MX by suspected cartel gunmen as a group of illegal aliens were being brought across the river. I’m told BP returned fire, nobody hit on either side, and that the illegal aliens did not make it across.”

The response from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was swift, with officers patrolling the area and deploying a drone for surveillance on the Mexican side. These measures underscore the heightened state of alert and the proactive approach taken by state authorities to safeguard the border.

NewsNation reporter Jorge Ventura added: “The illegals were blocked from crossing the river after Border Patrol agents returned fire.” This incident reflects the persistent threats posed by criminal organizations attempting to exploit vulnerabilities along the border.

During his presidency, Donald Trump made border security a priority. On January 20, he re-entered the American political scene with decisive actions, notably classifying criminal gangs and drug cartels operating out of Mexico as “foreign terrorist organizations.” This marked a historic first for any US president. The designation tasked the State Department with identifying which groups would appear on this list, reinforcing a stringent stance against these malicious entities.

Trump’s well-documented antipathy towards criminal operatives in Latin America dates back to his initial presidential campaign announcement in 2015. At that time, he famously accused the Mexican government of intentionally funneling drugs, criminals, and rapists into the United States. In response, he proposed and later enacted, robust border protection policies. These measures led to the mass deportation of illegal aliens and the construction of a substantial barrier along the US-Mexico border, constructed of concrete and metal, extending for hundreds of miles.

However, these initiatives faced significant pushback from Democrats, who opposed them vigorously. The contentious political climate resulted in halts to the border wall project. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been criticized for its border policies, accused by some of exacerbating the already precarious situation at the southern border. Critics argue that these policies have led to unprecedented levels of danger and instability, inviting increased criminal activity from Mexican cartels.
