During CNN’s coverage of the certification of the electoral college results, John King suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris could make a comeback in the future despite her resounding loss to President-elect Donald Trump in November. King warned against discounting Harris as a potential nominee or player in the 2028 election, pointing to Trump’s improbable comeback in 2024.
King pointed out that Harris just won 75 million votes and raised a billion dollars, making her a popular and formidable candidate. However, he also acknowledged that she has “giant problems,” including her perceived disconnect with working class Americans and her image as a “coastal elite.”
Yet, King argued that these are not insurmountable obstacles, noting that Trump had even more challenges when he left Washington four years ago. He also raised the question of whether politicians can learn from their mistakes and their environment, suggesting that Harris still has room for growth and improvement.
However, CNN political analyst Mark Halperin cautioned that Harris might have better odds at winning the California governor’s race than securing the Democratic presidential nomination again. He highlighted her weakness of avoiding difficult choices under pressure and questioned whether she is ready for the challenges of being governor of California, running for president, or being president.
Despite these uncertainties, it is clear that Harris has not been written off by the media and her party. The decision on whether she should run for governor or president will ultimately depend on the evaluation of her strength as a candidate. But one thing is for sure – Harris is not going away anytime soon.
I would hope the Dems would make a better choice the next time around, but they’re notorious for ignoring the people and pushing their own agenda so- it’s possible. And with Trump’s comeback serving as a reminder that anything is possible in politics, it would be foolish to count her out.
