Hollywood actor Jon Cryer recently defended child sex changes on Bill Maher’s “Random Club” podcast, comparing it to the increased acceptance of left-handedness in society. During a heated conversation with Maher, Cryer claimed that children are now openly embracing being transgender because it has become socially acceptable, similar to how left-handedness was once suppressed.
The discussion was sparked by Maher’s criticism of legislation restricting child sex changes, which has been passed in at least 20 states and was the subject of a recent Supreme Court case. Maher argued that children are not able to fully understand the consequences of such a life-altering decision, to which Cryer replied that it’s now more common because society has become more accepting of it.
“You’re asking too much of children,” Maher retorted. “There’s a default setting for humans, male and female. Not everyone is a conservative who says ‘everyone is’ one or the other, but not me.”
Cryer interrupted Maher to claim that children who undergo sex changes are not doing it because they want to, but because they feel it’s necessary. However, Maher pointed out that being transgender has become “cool” and a trend among some kids.
“Children don’t know anything,” Maher bluntly stated. “The idea that as a child I would have to deal with something like this…”
To which Cryer argued back, “But the people who go through it don’t say, ‘This is the life I want.’ No parent wants to be faced with these choices.”
Maher then brought up the fact that some kids nowadays choose to be transgender, to which Cryer compared it to the increased prevalence of left-handedness in society. Cryer claimed that just as left-handedness was suppressed for thousands of years before being accepted, being openly transgender has also faced societal suppression.
“There’s no bad thing about being left-handed,” Cryer said. “But once scientists said there’s no negative impact, left-handedness just shot up. It’s happened societally before and that’s the closest analogy I can think of.”
Maher, however, disagreed and pointed out that children choosing to change their sex is a far more serious decision than being left-handed.
The exchange between Cryer and Maher highlights the divide between those who support and those who oppose child sex changes. While Cryer’s comments seem to defend the practice, many others, including Maher, argue that children are not equipped to make such a life-altering decision.
With the rise of transgenderism and gender identity issues, the debate over child sex changes is becoming increasingly contentious in our society. And with celebrities like Cryer using analogies like left-handedness to defend it, the conversation will only continue to escalate.
