Megan Rapinoe is a hypocrite of the highest order, and her actions at a Seattle “pride” parade only prove this. During the parade, held on Sunday, Rapinoe and her partner, former WNBA star Sue Bird, served as the grand marshals. As the two rode atop a white vehicle, they were approached by journalist Katie Daviscourt of The Post Millennial, who posed a question that made Rapinoe squirm in discomfort.
Daviscourt asked Rapinoe about the U.S. women’s soccer team’s infamous loss to a high school boys team in 2017, and whether it is fair for transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports. Instead of giving a clear answer, Rapinoe awkwardly laughed and took a drink from a Dixie cup. This incident highlights the multifaceted hypocrisy of Rapinoe, who has been a vocal advocate for transgender athletes in women’s sports.
In April, Rapinoe was one of many athletes to sign a letter urging the NCAA to allow transgender “women” to compete in women’s sports. The letter argued that banning transgender athletes would be the wrong side of history, as sport is for everyone. However, it seems that the only consideration here is for men who identify as women, and not for women who would be forced to compete against them. This blatant disregard for the safety and fairness of women’s sports is truly shocking and reveals the true intentions of Rapinoe and those who signed the letter.
It is also worth noting that Rapinoe herself will not have to worry about competing against males, as she has retired from soccer. Her actions are purely performative, as she will never have to face the consequences of her beliefs. This is a privilege that she hypocritically affords herself, while pushing for policies that have dire consequences for other women in sports.
Rapinoe’s support for transgender athletes in women’s sports also contradicts her advocacy for defunding the police. As a member of the USWNT, Rapinoe publicly kneeled in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which calls for defunding the police. Yet, she had no issue with standing behind a large, intimidating security guard who stepped in between her and Daviscourt. This selective filter of security against the very ideals she supports is just another example of Rapinoe’s hypocrisy.

It is time for the world to see Megan Rapinoe for who she truly is: a hypocrite who espouses ideas that benefit herself, while disregarding the consequences for others. Her squirming and uncomfortable laughter when confronted with her own contradictions is proof that her actions are not rooted in genuine beliefs or principles.
We must not let her and her manipulative tactics continue to influence women’s sports and endanger the safety and fairness of these spaces. It is time for the world to ignore Rapinoe and others like her, and stand up for the rights of real women in sports.
