Whoopi Goldberg knows that her main self-appointed role as moderator for ABC’s The View is to never say former President Donald Trump’s name; she chooses to refer to him simply as “you know who,” akin to calling him Voldemort from the Harry Potter series. On Tuesday’s episode of the show, she continued her tradition by attempting to make fun of Trump’s recent comments about his stance on “abortion rights.” However, she seemingly had a memory slip when she couldn’t remember which years he had run for president and had to be reminded by her co-host Joy Behar.
As Goldberg tried to begin addressing Trump’s comments, she mentioned that they had “landed with a thud with a ton of conservatives.” She went on to inform the audience that “anti-abortion activists are slamming it as a betrayal to people who voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” before suddenly pausing and asking: “What does it–? Voted for him in 2016 and 2020? How did that…?” It was clear that she was struggling to make a connection in her thoughts.
Her co-host Joy Behar had to step in and guide her, breaking down the fact that Trump had indeed received votes and run in those years: “Well, they voted for him in both – people who voted for him voted in those elections.” Goldberg quickly caught on and replied, “Okay. Gotcha.” The other co-host, Sunny Hostin, added in jest: “Real Trumpers.”
Goldberg immediately dismissed her moment of confusion and redirected the conversation back to Trump’s comments on abortion. But later in the segment, she couldn’t help but make a jab at conservative leaders, suggesting that they were competing to see who could come up with policies to most negatively impact women’s lives.
She quipped: “Number one, first of all, Pence, Lindsey Graham, and Trump are fighting to see who could make women’s lives more miserable. That’s like what they’re really fighting for. How can we really destroy women in this country? That’s it.” She then proceeded to take a jab at Senator Graham’s lack of spine, saying: “Lindsey Graham will be on his knees flying down to Mar-a-Lago — if he had a spine he could sit upright on the plane but he doesn’t have a spine, so what’s he going to do? I mean, he just goes back and forth trying to get his pension.”
It seems that Goldberg had yet another moment of forgetfulness when she couldn’t remember which years Trump ran for the presidency. She must get it from her president.
