Ex-AOC Activist Spills the Truth
Lucy Biggers used to be deep in the movement. She backed AOC. She marched for climate action. She cared about plastic bans and dramatic emissions cuts.
Then came COVID. That changed things fast.
Biggers says the lockdowns showed her how fragile and costly sweeping rules can be. Emissions dropped about 5 percent during those months. Not zero. Not paradise. Just a small blip. She wondered: would living like that forever be worth the trade-offs?
She started asking hard questions. What happens to people who lose jobs, or feel isolated, or see freedoms vanish for small gains on paper? What does a society locked down look like long term? For her, the answers didn’t fit the hopeful script she’d been handed.
She also started to notice plastics everywhere. Masks. Gloves. Plexiglass. PPE exploded. For years she had been worried about single-use items. Now the world was full of new plastic. And it turns out, society absorbed it without collapse.
As she told Maya Sulkin for The Free Press, “I was like, wait a minute, I’ve been sweating about single use plastic straws for the past five years, and now we’ve proliferated more plastic in the past few months than I’ve seen in my lifetime and looking around, it seems like we’re fine. It looks like society was able to absorb that plastic and the world has not ended.”
That moment cracked her certainty. The predictions of imminent, catastrophic weather impacts didn’t match what she saw day to day. The doomsday scenarios felt less convincing. The policies felt more intrusive.
Her story isn’t just one person changing her mind. It’s a common pattern. Big societal shifts make people reevaluate. Radical policies that sound tidy on paper can look very different in practice.
If someone who was so committed can question the movement, it raises questions for others too. People on the right see this as proof that skeptical thinking matters. People on the left should take note: lived experience can change minds.
