Hunter Biden Flees U.S., $17M Debt Exposed
New filings and press reports say Hunter Biden left the country and is living overseas while billions of questions swirl around his money and security detail.
People close to the case say he’s buried in debt. Court papers tied to a billing dispute with his former lawyers say the man once in the public eye now “lives abroad” and “cannot afford” to pay down legal bills. The filing also accuses him of failing to pay amounts “substantially in excess of $50,000.”
There’s also the podcast line that made headlines: on one show he said he was in “$17 million of debt.”
Photos from last year show Hunter traveling with his wife, Melissa Cohen, and their young son in Cape Town. Those pictures sparked a lot of heat — not just because of the travel, but because Secret Service agents were nearby.

That reporting led to action from President Donald Trump. On Truth Social he slammed the idea of a large taxpayer-funded detail and announced a pull-back.
“Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States Taxpayer. There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous! He is currently vacationing in, of all places, South Africa, where the Human Rights of people has been strenuously questioned,” Trump said last year on Truth Social.
“Because of this, South Africa has been taken off our list of Countries receiving Economic and Financial Assistance. Please be advised that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden who has 13 agents will be taken off the list,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, the law firm that represented Hunter in his tax and gun cases is suing for unpaid fees. The Daily Mail summarized parts of the new filing: the court filing bluntly states ‘Mr Biden lives abroad’, and argues that the former First Son ‘cannot afford’ to pay off his outstanding legal fees. The firm says he left bills ‘substantially in excess of $50,000’.
That’s the paper trail so far. Travel photos. A billing fight. A podcast confession. And a president calling out the arrangement and cutting protection. For critics, it raises simple questions: if a private citizen is saddled with debt and living overseas, why did he get such extensive, taxpayer-funded protection in the first place?
Watch this space. The legal filings will push the story forward. So will any follow-up from prosecutors and the courts. For now, the mix of debt claims, overseas stays, and security coverage is keeping Hunter Biden in the headlines.
