Minneapolis Memorial Torched — Where’s the Outrage?
Someone poured gasoline on a fenced memorial to Renee Good in south Minneapolis and set it ablaze, according to local officials. The fire was put out before anyone was hurt, but some memorial items were damaged.
City Council member Jason Chavez said the memorial was targeted near 33rd Street and Portland Avenue. The Minneapolis Police Department reported that a pile of wood was lit and that witnesses found gas canisters after the flames were doused.
“This is despicable,” Chavez wrote.
Independent photojournalist Ryan Vizzions was at the scene. He shot photos while helping to put the fire out. He called the incident arson: “This was a clear case of arson in my opinion, and I hope whoever did it is held accountable,” he said.
This incident hits a nerve. In 2020, many on the left dismissed large-scale property damage during riots. Now, a memorial tied to their causes is burned and the reaction is swift. People on the right are pointing out the inconsistency. Critics say the difference is obvious: when your city or your symbol gets hit, property suddenly matters.
Neighbors helped extinguish the flames. Police say there were no injuries. Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward so the person or people responsible can be found.
The episode also drew social-media attention and hot takes. Here are the embeds and videos that circulated:

Tell them to just pretend it was a police station or a black-owned business downtown.

Whatever your view, arson is a crime. Memorials are meant to honor people. If political argument turns into vandalism and fire, the public should demand accountability — and consistent principles about property and safety.
