Trump Backs Steve Hilton — Big Shakeup?
President Donald Trump has put his weight behind Steve Hilton in the California governor’s contest. It’s a bold move. It lands hard. It changes the math.
Hilton is a former Fox News host and a political outsider by design. He’s been running on a platform of shakeups. He promises to cut taxes, fight crime, and push back on Sacramento’s one-party rule. Republican voters are paying attention.
President Trump made his backing public in a Truth Social post. He didn’t mince words. He framed this as a fight to save a state he says has gone off course.
“I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years. He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post about Hilton, a former Fox News host, on Monday.
“Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job. People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and Taxes are the highest of any State in the Country, maybe the World. Steve can turn it around, before it is too late, and, as President, I will help him to do so! With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before! Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT. He will be a GREAT Governor and, importantly, WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!” the president declared in the post…
Hilton answered with gratitude and a direct pitch to voters about fixing California’s long-term problems.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of President Donald J. Trump,” Hilton said in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital. “California should be the best place in the world to follow your dreams, raise a family, start and grow a business. We have everything we need to lead our country again. But after 16 years of one-party rule, we have the highest poverty rate, highest unemployment rate, and highest cost of living in America.
Republican insiders are watching closely. Some worry Trump’s endorsement could consolidate support behind Hilton and squeeze the other GOP contender. That might hand a path to the general election that looks very different than before. It could also open unexpected lanes for Democrats if the vote splits badly.
There’s also the optics. A presidential endorsement brings donors, media attention, and momentum. It can push voters to pick a side. It can also make the race nastier and faster.
California is hungry for change. Many voters are fed up with high taxes, rising crime, and a costly housing market. Hilton’s message is simple: fix the basics and get people back to work. Trump’s backing amplifies that message.
Expect the primary to heat up. Expect campaign ads to multiply. And expect one question to loom: can a Republican overhaul California’s long-standing political setup? The answer will matter to voters across the country.
