The House Committee on Oversight and Reform held a hearing Wednesday on “The Rise of Anti–LGBTQI+ Extremism and Violence in the United States.”
The hearing addressed the recent shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which resulted in the death of five people and injury to many others. During the hearing, transgender activist Olivia Hunt blamed legislation aimed at stopping child sex change procedures for the rise in violent crimes against gay and transgender individuals.
Hunt argued that laws against child sex change procedures contribute to an environment of stigma and violence toward LGBTQ individuals. She said that such laws cause LGBTQ individuals to feel threatened, and as a result, they may not feel safe but she failed to address the overall rise in violent crimes.
She also failed to mention the gender identities and political views of the alleged attackers. Why? Because it doesn’t add up.
“Anti-LGBTQ activists have appropriated this terminology, used by survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and used it to slander LGBTQ people and our allies as predatory, harmful to our children,” Hunt said.
She continued, “This same rhetoric has been used as justification for anti-LGBTQ activism. Heavily armed protestors have made numerous attacks or attempts at intimidation against family-friendly pride events and drag performances around the country. Even hospitals have been targeted by bomb threats and intimidation tactics based on social media figures spreading baseless stories that the performers are, in their words, ‘mutilating children.’”
“There’s a straight line that can be drawn from the legislation trying to strip trans people of our human rights to the increasingly hostile and inflammatory rhetoric portraying us as a threat to society, to the acts of violence that have taken far too many lives,” Hunt added.
Of course, she also targeted Florida Gov Ron DeSantis in her speech. Not once did she, or anyone at this hearing mention the gender identity or political affiliation of the alleged attackers. Reports have already shown that the Colorado Spring attacker was a trans member of the LBGTQ community, but I guess that doesn’t fit the narrative.
