The senator wasted no time in sharing bodycam footage of the immediate aftermath of the failed assassination attempt, which took place earlier this month. The video, which captures the critical moments following the attack, shows officers from the Beaver County Emergency Service Unit (ESU) and U.S. Secret Service agents swiftly springing into action as they mobilize to the rooftop from where the assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, opened fire.

Grassley took to social media to share the footage, shedding light on the situation and raising questions about the security failures that led to this incident. In a tweet, he wrote, “July 13 Bodycam footage provides more info than Secret Service will share w America We NEED detailed answers ASAP on security failures TRANSPARENCY BRINGS ACCOUNTABILITY.” It is evident that he is seeking transparency and accountability from the Secret Service, as the video raises more questions than their initial response.

The footage, obtained from the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit in compliance with congressional requests, provides a more detailed understanding of the situation. It reveals law enforcement officers and agents rushing towards the AGR building in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Crooks had taken a sniper’s position with an AR-15-style rifle. The video shows a trail of blood leading to Crooks’ body and the scattered shell casings around him, with law enforcement counting at least eight casings. This information is crucial, as it shows the severity of the situation and the potential harm that could have been caused if the assailant had not been taken down.

 

Moreover, the footage also shows officers expressing concerns about potential explosive devices, adding a new layer of danger to the situation.
