Maher Calls NYC Mayor a Communist—Watch
Bill Maher didn’t hold back. He named New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani a “straight-up communist.” Short. Sharp. Direct.
Maher made the claim on Real Time. He focused on comments from one of Mamdani’s advisors, Cea Weaver. Those comments about private property and who should hold it have stirred strong reactions.
Maher said: “Let me settle it: He’s a straight-up communist.” He doubled down by warning Democrats about optics and votes. “Which is fine. It’s fine. It’s a belief system. He’s allowed to believe it, and people are allowed to vote for it,” Maher continued. “But if liberals deny it, like he’s just going through a goth phase, they’re going to lose more elections. This is not a communist country.”
He also framed the choice in blunt terms. “Really, the choices we get here are either the worst version of crony capitalism or communism, either a side deal for the Trump family every time he does business overseas, or the lady who says, ‘Impoverish the white middle class,’” he said.
Those are big claims. They landed for a reason. Supporters of Mamdani see a reformer. Critics see a radical. Maher sided with the critics and used the advisor’s words as evidence. Here’s one of those lines circulating online exactly as posted:
“If you don’t believe in the government’s sacred right to seize private property, it’s over.”
The quote above was shared widely on social media. It added fuel to the debate about where Mamdani sits on the political spectrum.
This matters beyond New York. Voters watch. Opponents will use strong language in campaigns. Allies may try to soften the message. Either way, the debate is raw and public. Maher’s point was simple: call it what it is, or suffer the political cost. That’s a warning Democrats should hear if they want to hold ground in swing districts and big cities alike.
Bill Maher exposes Zohran Mamdani as a “straight-up communist” with damning words from his own advisor.
These are real statements from Mamdani’s tenant advocate, Cea Weaver:
• “If you don’t believe in the government’s sacred right to seize private property, it’s over.”
