Clinton Sparks Fire Over ICE Shooting

Violence broke out in Minneapolis after a weekend operation by DHS law enforcement. It was a targeted action against an individual wanted on violent-assault charges. Federal agents say an armed man approached Border Patrol officers and was fatally shot.

The man was identified as 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti from south Minneapolis. Officials say he had a 9 mm semi-automatic and two extra full magazines. Agents describe the encounter as an apparent attack on officers during the operation.

Local leaders have been critical of federal immigration enforcement. Minnesota’s governor and Minneapolis’ mayor have pushed back against ICE and other federal efforts. That created a tense backdrop for the operation.

Earlier this month, Renee Good was shot and killed in a separate incident after officials say she tried to run over an ICE agent. Those cases are fresh in residents’ minds.

Former President Bill Clinton issued a strong statement Sunday. He sharply criticized how the federal response has played out and how bystanders and protesters were treated. He said:

“Over the course of a lifetime, we face only a few moments where the decisions we make and the actions we take will shape our history for years to come,” Clinton said in a statement on Sunday.

“This is one of them,” Clinton added.

He also wrote in that same statement:

“People, including children, have been seized from their homes, workplaces, and the street by masked federal agents. Peaceful protestors and citizen exercising their constitutional right to observe and document law enforcement have been arrested, beaten, teargassed, and most searingly, in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shot and killed,” Clinton said,

Clinton accused members of the Trump Administration of lying. That escalated the rhetoric. Supporters of tougher immigration enforcement pushed back. They say law enforcement must be able to carry out federal arrests even when local officials resist cooperation.

This is a flashpoint for two things: federal immigration policy and how cities handle cooperation with federal authorities. People on all sides want answers. Questions remain about the exact sequence of events and the use of force.

Officials say investigations are underway. Independent and federal reviews will follow. The community wants transparency. So do lawmakers.
