Virginia Democrats Lose Big as Court Knocks Down Map
The Virginia Supreme Court handed Democrats a sharp setback on Friday. In a 4-3 ruling, the court struck down a voter-approved redistricting map because of procedural mistakes in how it passed. That means Virginia will use the same House districts from the 2022 and 2024 elections in the 2026 midterms. Democrats currently hold a 6-5 edge under those lines.
The map had been a big piece of the party’s plan to improve its odds next cycle. Supporters said voters already backed the change. Opponents said the process was rushed and legally shaky. Now that plan is on ice.
The reaction from the left was fast and hot. Hasan Piker wrote on X, “Scotus gutted the voting rights act and tennessee carved up the last dem district destroying black voter power in the state,” Piker wrote on X. “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable.”
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., defended the effort and argued that Democrats had done what they believed voters asked for. He said, “But the Court let the process move forward, and Virginians sent a message loud and clear: we see President Trump’s brazen power grab in states across the country, and we won’t stand for it,” Kaine continued. He also echoed the claim that the ruling hurts voting rights.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Democrats are “exploring all options” and blasted the ruling as “an unprecedented and undemocratic action that cannot stand”. He added, “MAGA Republicans have adopted voter suppression as a strategy, as also evidenced by far-right extremists on the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act to open the door to a Jim Crow-like attack on Black representation across the American South,” Jeffries continued.
Virginia House Speaker Don Scott took a calmer line. He said, “We respect the court. But we will keep fighting for a democracy where voters — not politicians — have the final say. Because in Virginia, power still belongs to the people.”
On the Republican side, RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said the ruling was about the rule of law, not politics. “Democrats just learned that when you try to rig elections, you lose,” said Chairman Gruters. “The RNC led the charge in court against this blatant power grab, where Virginia Democrats poured more than $66 million into an effort to lock in control and silence voters. We took them to court, and we won.”
The ruling now resets the map fight in Virginia. Democrats lose a line they wanted. Republicans keep the current districts for another cycle. And the next round of legal warfare is already taking shape.
