Three Women Beat Sammie Lee Outside Longview Bar, Screaming “Free Karmelo!”

Sammie Lee Beaten in Longview as Attackers Shout ‘Free Karmelo!’

A Texas woman says she was left bloodied after a violent attack outside a Longview bar, and the case is getting a lot of attention because of what was allegedly shouted during the beating.

Independent journalist Sarah Fields said the attack happened on June 20 outside Whiskey J’s. The woman identified as Sammie Lee had been out drinking and was walking back to her vehicle when, according to Fields, three women jumped her. Lee reportedly did not know them.

The injuries were serious. Lee reportedly needed staples in her head, wore a neck brace, and had a black eye. Photos shared online showed her covered in blood after the assault. It was not a minor fight. It was the kind of scene that leaves people shaken just reading about it.

According to Fields, Lee said the attackers screamed “Free Karmelo!” during the attack and also said they were going to target “the smallest white girl they could find.” Those comments are now a big part of why the story is spreading so fast online.

Police have since charged three women in the case. Ciarrianne Fuller, 21, of Longview, was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Gregg County Jail. Dejae Brown, 21, of Pittsburg, and Alana Mumphrey, 21, of Longview, later turned themselves in. CBS 19 reported that all three were charged with assault causing bodily injury.

The incident also comes as the Karmelo Anthony case continues to stir strong reaction online. Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison on June 9 for the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Austin Metcalf. That verdict has been a flashpoint for heated public debate, and this Longview attack is now being viewed through that same ugly lens.

At the end of the day, the core facts are simple. A woman says she was ambushed after leaving a bar. She says she was badly hurt. And now three women are facing criminal charges while investigators and the public try to make sense of what happened.
