WATCH: Houston Officers Jump Into Uber Driver’s Car to Chase Fleeing Suspect
A bizarre late-night police chase in Houston briefly turned an unsuspecting Uber driver into an unwilling participant.
According to FOX 26 Houston, the Houston Police Department received a terroristic threat call connected to an incident on August 7. Police said a woman was at a pool with her children when a male suspect came out of an apartment and got into a fight with them.
The suspect allegedly threatened to shoot the woman and her children. She then called authorities.
Two female officers arrived to take the woman’s statement. The suspect reportedly reappeared while the officers were there. When police tried to apprehend him, he broke free and ran.
That was when one officer jumped into the car of Uber driver Anthony Baines. The officer shouted, “Go, go, go, go!” and told him to follow the fleeing suspect.
The officer then ordered Baines to pick up her partner. The two officers appeared confused at first about which direction the suspect had taken. Once they spotted him, both officers jumped out of the vehicle and resumed the pursuit on foot.
The chase still did not end with an arrest. The suspect managed to escape into the night and remains at large, according to the report.
Baines shared dashcam video of the incident. The footage was later obtained by FOX 26 and FOX News.

Baines, an Iraq War veteran, later described the strange encounter in an interview with FOX 26.
“This is something I kind of think about that only happens in action movies where somebody’s pursuing a person, and they call for a civilian to help,” Baines told the outlet.
“I am an Iraq veteran, so I’ve been in a very stressful environment before, where I’ve had to just kind of focus on what was at hand,” he continued.
“And, at that moment, I just knew that the cops needed me and I was just going to do whatever they told me to do.”
What began as a routine Uber trip suddenly became a police pursuit, with Baines following the officers’ directions as they tried to catch the suspect.
