TRAGIC: MicahJo Barnett Dies After Scoring Touchdown in Season Opener

A college football game in Missouri ended in tragedy Saturday after William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett died moments after scoring a touchdown.

Barnett, a junior who was majoring in business administration, suffered a medical emergency on the sideline during the first quarter of William Jewell’s season opener against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri.

Paramedics treated Barnett on the sideline for several minutes before taking him by ambulance to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead, according to local reports and the school.

The game was canceled after Barnett was taken from the stadium. William Jewell led 7-0 at the time, with Barnett’s touchdown providing the only points of the contest.

A post shared after the game showed Barnett’s touchdown and reported that the player had collapsed on the sidelines after the score.

The university confirmed Barnett’s death and offered condolences to his family, teammates, students, and the broader William Jewell community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the university said in a statement.

Barnett was a key player for the Cardinals. He led William Jewell in rushing during the 2025 season. Across two seasons with the program, he rushed for 457 yards and scored six touchdowns.

Another video showed the touchdown Barnett had scored earlier in the game. The moment was marked by the contrast between the excitement of the play and the heartbreaking news that followed.

After Barnett’s death, William Jewell players spoke about their teammate and the impact he had on the team. They described him as humble, loyal, and committed to the people around him.

“He’s always going to be with us.”

“He never acted like he was better than anybody and we’ll play for him like he played for us.”

“We love him.”

A vigil was scheduled for Saturday night at 8 p.m. at William Jewell College to honor Barnett and his family. The sudden loss left teammates, school officials, and the community mourning a young player remembered both for his performance on the field and his place among the Cardinals.
