Miley Cyrus’ New Album Plunges From No. 1 to No. 157 in Second Week

Miley Cyrus’ new album has gone from a No. 1 debut to No. 157 on the Billboard 200 in its second week. That is a 156-place slide. Variety described it as the steepest drop it could find for an album after a No. 1 opening.

When Billboard released the next chart’s top 10, Bass Persuades was nowhere in the list. The full chart placed it at No. 157. The album’s title track had reached No. 35 on the Hot 100, but Variety reported that reviews found the rest of the project less dance-oriented than the single suggested.

Cyrus has since released a video for another song, Different Religion. But the album’s debut was already narrow. Parade reported that it opened with about 61,000 equivalent units, just 70 more than Ella Langley’s Dandelion.

Atlantic had issued 16 vinyl variants, nine CD versions, six downloads and a cassette. The digital price was also reduced. Before that sales push, the album had been projected to open outside the top five. The result was a No. 1 debut followed almost immediately by one of the sharpest falls in Billboard 200 history.

The chart result arrived as Cyrus was preparing for two major Hollywood Bowl shows on Oct. 16 and 18. Three weeks before the chart fall, she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that the dates were effectively a dress rehearsal for a possible residency close to home.

Nearly 1.5 million people entered the presale queue for the two shows, according to People and Entertainment Weekly. The Hollywood Bowl holds about 17,500 people, meaning the two performances could accommodate roughly 35,000 fans. Both sold out within 10 minutes, Variety reported.

The concerts will be Cyrus’ first major dates since a Mexico City festival performance in November 2022. Lowe told her she would need something like 80 Bowl shows to meet the demand. Cyrus said that had been the idea. “I’ve learned now through the queue that my calculations are correct, and people will come to me. I don’t need to drive to you,” she said. Page Six quoted a longer version of the remark: “Proven. That was a test. I win.”

Cyrus has also made blunt political statements. After Super Tuesday in 2016, she posted a screenshot of the results and wrote that she was going to “move out da country,” according to the Washington Examiner. She called President Donald Trump a “f***ing nightmare,” posted a photo of herself crying, and wrote, “Honestly f*** this s*** I am moving if this is my president! I don’t say things I don’t mean!”

She did not move. In a 2019 Vanity Fair interview, Cyrus called the idea something “we all said” and did not mean. She then asked whether she would feel proud “running away from, and leaving everyone else here to live under, a completely racist, sexist, hateful a**hole.”

Now, the singer’s latest release is facing a very different kind of public test. A No. 1 debut created major expectations. A plunge to No. 157 in the next week has turned that debut into the central story surrounding Bass Persuades.
