Trump Slams Obama Over White House Renovation Mockery
President Trump responded Monday after former President Barack Obama mocked the work being done to update and beautify the White House. Trump did not soften his criticism.
Obama made the remarks during a weekend speech supporting Democrats facing voters in the midterms. He targeted projects Trump has completed at the executive mansion, including pavers installed in the Rose Garden, a new ballroom, and a helipad on the White House lawn.
Obama also criticized the amount of gold used inside the building. He said, “There’s gold everywhere. What’s with the gold? He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”
The comparison drew pushback from Trump supporters online, who said the remark was condescending toward middle-class Americans who patronize the popular restaurant chain. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent joined the response by eating lunch at one of the restaurants in solidarity.
Trump defended the renovations by focusing on maintenance and the importance of the building itself. He said overseeing the projects takes only five or 10 minutes of his time each day. Trump also said Obama never noticed the “dirt and filth” at the White House while living there.
Trump, a lifelong builder, then looked directly into the camera as he addressed Obama. His response was blunt:
“The White House, President Obama, is a symbol of America. It has to be clean. The columns can’t be broken. The bricks can’t be falling off under the plaster. And for you to say it’s a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president.”
The dispute turned a disagreement over renovations into another political confrontation between Trump and Obama. Obama focused on the building’s gold details and overall appearance, while Trump presented the work as necessary upkeep for a national symbol.
Trump’s remarks were captured in a video post:
Bessent also delivered a pointed response outside a Cheesecake Factory restaurant. Referring to Obama’s museum, Bessent said, “This is the man who built a museum that looks like Darth Vader’s tomb. I had a great meal and I would tell the Martha’s Vineyard set to give it a try.”
That jab added a second layer to the controversy. Instead of allowing Obama’s restaurant comparison to stand, Bessent used the setting to push back on the criticism and highlight the political divide surrounding the White House changes.
The argument is about more than paint, gold, bricks, or new construction. Trump says the White House must be properly maintained because it represents America, while Obama criticized the look and style of the work.
