Florida Man Fatally Shot After Attacking Another Man During Argument; Shooter Released

Cocoa Beach Restaurant Dispute Turns Fatal; Shooter Released

A late-night dispute outside a Cocoa Beach restaurant turned deadly after a verbal argument escalated into a physical fight, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to Graham’s Beach Grill at 2:18 a.m. Thursday. They found 33-year-old Walter Butler of Rockledge suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The sheriff’s office said Butler and another man had exchanged words about a previous disagreement. The situation then became physical when Butler attacked the other man. During the altercation, the man who had been attacked fired a single shot.

Butler went inside the restaurant after the shooting and collapsed. Brevard County Fire and Rescue personnel provided first aid at the scene. Butler was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his wounds.

The man who fired the shot did not leave the area. He remained at the scene and met with responding deputies. Investigators detained him and transported him to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Services, where he spoke with homicide agents.

Based on the initial investigative findings, the sheriff’s office said the confirmed shooter was released. He continues to cooperate with investigators.

The investigation remains ongoing. Agents are still working to interview additional people who were present when the shooting happened. The initial account from authorities centers on a previous disagreement, an attack, and a single shot fired during the physical confrontation.

The report also described two other recent shootings involving people who were reportedly responding to attacks or an intrusion.

On Sunday, a concealed-carry permit holder in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood shot one of two assailants who had accosted him, NBC Chicago reported. The wounded assailant was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said the armed citizen had a valid Illinois Firearms Owner Identification card and concealed-carry permit, and opened fire after being attacked.

In a separate Texas incident, residents were awakened by banging inside their home at about 4:00 a.m. Saturday, according to WFAA. A man in the residence retrieved a firearm, confronted an intruder, and fired a shot that wounded the suspect. The suspect faces burglary charges.
