Texas Mom Charged With Capital Murder After Telling Deputies, “I shot both of my kids”
A Texas mother is facing two counts of capital murder after authorities say both of her sons were shot inside their Waxahachie home early Thursday morning.
Colleen Nichole Lemmon, 42, was arrested after deputies responded to a residence in the 900 block of Big Sky Drive on October 1. The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in as an unknown emergency, and deputies arrived at approximately 4:13 a.m.
The shooting claimed the lives of Lemmon’s two sons. Christopher Scott Pitre, 21, was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene. His 15-year-old brother was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the younger victim’s identity.
According to a search warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA, the initial 911 caller hung up. Dispatchers reached the caller again, and a female voice reportedly said all units were needed before the call ended a second time.
When deputies arrived, they could hear a woman yelling for more units. The affidavit says she also told them she had a gun in her hand. Deputies identified the woman as Lemmon and noticed blood on her hands.
Inside the mobile home, deputies reportedly found Lemmon in the living room “covered in blood with a gun next to her.” The affidavit also described “what seemed to be self-inflicted cuts to her wrists.” Her injuries were later characterized by authorities as non-life-threatening.
The affidavit says Lemmon told deputies, “I shot both of my kids.” She directed them to the master bedroom and the back bedroom, where they found Pitre and the 15-year-old with gunshot wounds to their heads.
Pitre was pronounced dead at the residence. His younger brother was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Investigators said evidence recovered during the investigation established probable cause to identify Lemmon as the person responsible for shooting both boys.
Lemmon was treated at a hospital before being taken to the Wayne McCollum Detention Center. She was booked on two counts of capital murder. According to WFAA, her bond was set at $2.5 million.
Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman expressed condolences to the victims’ family. “My deepest sympathies go out to the victims’ father, family members, and loved ones involved in this tragic incident.” Norman also said the family would remain in the department’s prayers.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or explained what may have led to the shooting.
