BYU Event Crosses A Shocking Line
An independent LGBT group at Brigham Young University is facing a wave of backlash after a Pride event in Provo reportedly featured political imagery that went far beyond normal protest. What was billed as a celebration quickly turned into something a lot more aggressive, and a lot more disturbing.
Campus Reform described the event this way: “Independent BYU LGBT center event displays painting of severed Trump head, invites kids to hit Mike Lee piñata”. According to the report, the Cougar Pride Center hosted “Provo Pride” on April 11. The day included a march through downtown Provo and a festival at Memorial Park.
That is where things got ugly. Reports say one vendor table displayed a painting of Donald Trump’s severed head on a platter, priced at $150, alongside decorative items described as Molotov cocktails. A photo from the event also showed a baby in a stroller near the table. That kind of imagery is not just edgy. It is the sort of thing that turns political hatred into a public spectacle.
Another video from the event showed young children, apparently there with their families, batting at a piñata of Utah Sen. Mike Lee until it broke open. That is a tough look for any group claiming to build community. Bringing kids into a scene like that makes the whole thing look even more reckless.
Mike Lee responded on X with a simple question: “Does Brigham Young University endorse this behavior?” He also wrote, “Not subtle”. That is putting it mildly. The public has every right to ask why this kind of display was allowed anywhere near a university setting, especially one tied to a private religious school.
The Cougar Pride Center says it was founded in 2021 and describes its mission as to “empower queer individuals,” “celebrate progress,” and “advocate for change through collaborative advocacy” for BYU students. Fine. But advocacy is one thing. Mock violence is another. Once political rage starts looking like a carnival game, the line has already been crossed.
If university leaders want to be taken seriously, they need to explain what happened and why. Students, parents, and donors should not be left wondering whether this was tolerated, ignored, or quietly approved. That answer matters.
