Sam Neill’s Cause of Death Revealed After ‘Jurassic Park’ Star Died Suddenly at 78

Jurassic Park Star Sam Neill’s Cause of Death Revealed

The cause of death for New Zealand actor Sam Neill has been revealed following his sudden passing earlier this week.

Neill, best known around the world for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, died Monday at the age of 78. His death stunned fans, especially after recent public comments about his health appeared to point in a hopeful direction.

His family announced the news on Instagram and described his passing as “sudden and unexpected.”

On Wednesday, Neill’s manager, Philip Grenz, told TMZ that the actor died from pneumonia.

TMZ had reported Tuesday that Rima Te Wiata, Neill’s former co-star in Hunt for the Wilderpeople, said the actor had been dealing with pneumonia before his death. Te Wiata and Neill appeared together in the 2016 film, which became one of the actor’s later-career fan favorites.

The news is especially heartbreaking because Neill had recently shared that he was cancer-free.

In 2023, Neill revealed that he had been diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer. The specific diagnosis was angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and fast-growing form of blood cancer.

After treatment, Neill announced in April that scans showed no sign of cancer in his body.

“I’ve just had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” Neill said back then. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”

That update made his passing even more difficult for longtime fans who had followed his health battle and celebrated the good news with him just months earlier.

Neill’s career stretched across decades and genres. While many moviegoers will always remember him as the calm, sharp, fossil-loving Dr. Grant, his work went far beyond the dinosaur franchise.

He returned to the role in Jurassic Park III, released in 2001, and again in Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022. His return in the 2022 film reunited him with other original franchise stars and gave longtime fans one more chance to see him in one of his most beloved roles.

Neill also appeared in major films including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, and The Horse Whisperer.

Across those roles, he built a reputation as a steady, thoughtful screen presence. He could play warmth, mystery, grit, and quiet humor without overdoing it. That made him stand out in big-budget hits and smaller character-driven films alike.

His death leaves behind a long list of memorable performances and a fan base spanning generations.
