A 30-year-old home health worker in Lake Charles, Louisiana, is behind bars after police say he poured bleach into a water bottle and gave it to the physically and mentally disabled man he was paid to care for.
Reginald Andre Wilson Jr. was arrested Monday night and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. He faces charges of aggravated battery, cruelty to persons with infirmities, mingling of harmful substances, and theft under $1,000. Bond was set at $70,000, according to The Advocate.
The alleged victim is 48-year-old Marshal Huntsberry. Family members say Huntsberry was struck in a hit-and-run years ago and has been unable to walk since. They also say he is physically and mentally disabled and cannot care for himself.
According to Lake Charles police, a relative who lives in the home called authorities around 7:30 p.m. Monday. Huntsberry had reportedly taken a drink from the bottle and immediately noticed that it tasted like bleach.
Police say the relative confronted Wilson, who admitted putting the bleach in the water.
The family posted home security footage. In the video, Wilson is seen walking toward the laundry area, picking up a large jug, pouring a substance into a water bottle, and shaking it. He then hands the bottle to Huntsberry and says, “Here, drink this.”
Heaven on Earth Network Inc., the agency that employed Wilson, said it removed him from the property and took Huntsberry to an emergency room for evaluation.
In its statement, the agency said, “We immediately took action and removed the worker and transported client to ER to be evaluated.” It also wrote that “our client’s health and safety is our number one priority and that any abuse is not tolerated by our agency.”
The agency said it was working with local authorities and state agencies according to its policies and procedures, and that it was cooperating with authorities as the investigation continued.
Heaven on Earth Network Inc. added that “the actions of this one person does not define who we are!”
The case remains under investigation. No final court outcome was reported.
