York College Student Dragged From Porch by Her Hair; Police Reportedly Arrived After Fifth Call
A disturbing incident in York County, Pennsylvania, late last week is raising serious questions about the response from police and campus safety.
FOX 43 reported that video footage showed a crowd storming a York College student’s front porch and attacking her as she tried to fight back. The group overpowered the young woman, dragged her into the street by her hair, and brutally assaulted her.
The report also said people who were not involved in the attack stood nearby and filmed rather than stepping in to help. The footage came with a viewer-discretion warning.
The response from authorities has become a major part of the story. A student and friend of the victim told FOX 43 that friends called 911 four times. According to her account, officers arrived only after a fifth call, when the beating was already over.
“We called the cops four times before anything even happened to us,”
She also described the police response as disorganized once officers arrived.
“It was kind of disorganized (when the cops arrived),”
She added:
“They were set up on the street and were talking to us. I really don’t remember because it was a lot of things happening.”
The student said she and her roommates were assaulted during the incident as well. One of the young women was already recovering from a sports-related injury. She also said someone sprayed mace across the porch and other surfaces around the house.
According to the student, the incident was not an isolated problem. She said a similar attack happened roughly two weeks earlier and involved the same group of people. In that earlier incident, a girl was arrested, but the student argued that the arrest had not stopped the trouble.
“She told people to get off her porch; someone ran at her and pulled out her hair, and then she called the cops,”
“Yeah, the girl got arrested, but that was two weeks ago.”
She then criticized both police and campus safety:
“So, that shows it’s the same group of people who are non-students, and the cops haven’t done anything to protect us, and campus safety hasn’t done anything.”
York City Police said they are investigating the incident along with ongoing disorderly-conduct complaints in the area. A department spokesperson told FOX 43:
“I can confirm that we are investigating this incident and are investigating on-going complaints of disorderly conduct in that area. I would ask that if anyone has any information on any of these incidents, that they submit a tip at www.yorkcitypolice.com”
The police department is asking anyone with information about the incidents to submit a tip. The account raises questions about how quickly help was dispatched and what police and campus safety are doing to protect students living near the college.
