DOJ Reportedly Seeks Indictment of Jan. 6 ‘Star Witness’ Cassidy Hutchinson
The Justice Department is reportedly seeking a federal criminal indictment of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over allegations that she lied to Congress during her January 6 testimony, according to PunchBowl News.
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division presented evidence to a federal grand jury this week. PunchBowl reported that prosecutors are expected to present more evidence and additional witnesses later this month. Hutchinson has not been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury.
An investigation into Hutchinson was reported earlier this year. Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon is spearheading the inquiry.
PunchBowl News reported:
“DOJ is seeking a federal criminal indictment of former WH aide Cassidy Hutchinson on charges of lying to Congress in her Jan. 6 testimony.”
Hutchinson’s testimony came in June 2022. She said then-President Donald Trump entered “the beast” after his speech at the Ellipse on January 6, believing he would be driven to the Capitol.
According to Hutchinson, she received information about the episode from Tony Ornato, the Assistant Director for the Secret Service. She said Trump became angry after learning that he was being driven back to the West Wing. Hutchinson testified that Trump shouted, “I’m the f*cking president! Take me up to the Capitol now!”
She also alleged that Trump reached toward the driver, grabbed the steering wheel, and tried to commandeer the presidential limousine. Hutchinson then claimed Secret Service Agent Bobby Engel grabbed Trump’s arm and pulled his hand away from the wheel.
Those claims later faced serious questions. The House oversight subcommittee, led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), said unreleased testimony from four White House employees who were present for Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech at the Ellipse “directly contradicted claims made by Cassidy Hutchinson.”
The Gateway Pundit previously compiled what it described as nine confirmed lies from Hutchinson’s congressional testimony, which the outlet characterized as debunked. The article also cites later reports alleging that Liz Cheney coached Hutchinson before her testimony.
The reported status is that the Justice Department has presented evidence to a grand jury, while prosecutors are expected to present more evidence and witnesses later this month. Hutchinson has not been subpoenaed to testify before the panel.
