Just 27% of Democrats Plan to Fly the American Flag on July 4—vs. 64% of Republicans

Poll: Only 27% of Democrats Plan to Fly the Flag July 4

A new poll is giving Independence Day a pretty clear red-vs.-blue split.

According to Reuters/Ipsos, just 27% of Democrats say they plan to display an American flag or flag bunting outside their home this July 4. Republicans, by contrast, came in at 64%.

That is a big gap. And it goes beyond simple decorations. The survey also asked Americans what the holiday means to them, and the answers showed the same divide.

Nearly two-thirds of Republicans, 65%, said July 4 is “a day where I celebrate the United States of America.” Only 24% of Democrats said the same. Democrats and independents were more likely than Republicans to say the holiday is “just like any other day.”

The poll was conducted June 12-15 among 1,537 U.S. adults. It lands at a time when America is approaching its 250th birthday, which makes the numbers stand out even more.

There was also fresh talk online about how some Democrats tried to project patriotism at the 2024 Democratic National Convention by handing out small American flags. Critics said it felt staged. Supporters argued it was a genuine display. Either way, this new poll suggests the optics did not change much for a lot of voters.

The bigger picture is simple. Republicans are still far more likely to treat the Fourth of July as a true national celebration. Democrats, at least in this survey, are much less likely to show that same instinct at home.

That matters because the flag is not just a piece of cloth. It is a signal. It says something about how people see the country, and whether they are proud to show it.

For a holiday built around American independence, that split is hard to miss.

Remember when the media assured us that Democrats had “reclaimed patriotism” because they waved some American flags at the 2024 DNC https://t.co/mpLh12MsQF pic.twitter.com/C8iFDy0CcK
