Trump-backed Mike Collins wins Georgia runoff, Kevin Hern takes Oklahoma GOP primary

Trump-Backed Mike Collins, Kevin Hern Win GOP Senate Primaries

Republicans picked up two Senate primary wins Tuesday night, with Trump-backed candidates coming out ahead in Georgia and Oklahoma. The results matter because these races are not just about party bragging rights. They help shape the fight for control of the Senate.

In Georgia, Rep. Mike Collins won the GOP runoff and will now move on to the general election against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff. The race had some built-in tension because Gov. Brian Kemp backed Collins’s opponent, Derek Dooley, which turned the runoff into a test of influence inside the state party.

Collins finished with 55.5% of the vote, while Dooley got 44.5%, according to the Associated Press. That is a solid win, not a squeaker. It gives Republicans a clear nominee in a race that is likely to draw a lot of money, a lot of attention, and plenty of outside spending before November.

Decision Desk HQ also projected Collins as the winner soon after the votes were in.

Oklahoma followed a similar path for Republicans. Rep. Kevin Hern won the GOP primary for the open Senate seat, according to NBC News projections. In a state that leans heavily Republican, that puts him in strong position heading into the fall.

Hern’s win keeps the seat in play for the GOP with a pretty wide cushion. Democrats can still run a race, but Oklahoma is a hard hill for them to climb. The map there is simple. Republicans start with the advantage, and it usually stays that way.

The bigger picture is easy to see. Trump’s backing still carries real weight in Republican primaries, and these results give the party two familiar names to rally around. With the midterms getting closer, every win like this helps build momentum and keeps the GOP in a stronger position for the battles ahead.
