Kimberly Guilfoyle Resigns as U.S. Ambassador to Greece Amid Pay-to-Play Allegations

Trump Responds After Guilfoyle Resigns Amid Greece Allegations

Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as U.S. ambassador to Greece on Tuesday, shortly after the White House announced that she had been asked to step down. Her departure followed days of reports about allegations involving her conduct and whether President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would remove her from the post.

The Associated Press, CNN, and The New York Post reported over the weekend that Trump and Rubio were considering firing Guilfoyle amid a possible pay-to-play scandal. The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 American Express bill.

Text messages released from Trump donor Eric Deters reportedly showed Guilfoyle seeking payment ahead of her confirmation hearing to become ambassador to Greece. In a July 3, 2025, text to Deters, Guilfoyle wrote, “Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” according to the released messages.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Guilfoyle had been heavily promoting Aktor Group, a Greek construction and energy company, in connection with multibillion-dollar natural gas deals across Europe and the Balkans. Aktor’s CEO flew Guilfoyle to France on a private jet, a trip that raised “pay-to-play” concerns.

Guilfoyle’s attorneys disputed the allegations. Her legal team said the private jet travel was cleared with the State Department and claimed the $100,000 was money owed to Guilfoyle for speaking engagements. Guilfoyle denied the allegations again in her Tuesday statement.

A source told The Gateway Pundit on Monday that Guilfoyle’s ambassadorship could be pulled as early as this week. By Tuesday morning, she had resigned.

Trump addressed the resignation when reporters asked about the allegations and Guilfoyle’s past engagement to his son. “She was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were reading.” Trump also said, “She wasn’t a member of my family. She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago,” and added that he had not spoken with Guilfoyle personally.

In her statement, Guilfoyle described serving as ambassador as an honor and thanked Trump and Rubio for giving her the opportunity to represent the United States. She said her work focused on advancing the America First agenda, strengthening the U.S. alliance with Greece, and delivering results for the American people.

Guilfoyle credited the embassy with helping secure agreements to expand American liquefied natural gas exports to Europe, advance the Vertical Corridor, reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian energy, strengthen defense ties with a critical NATO ally, and expand opportunities for American businesses and investment throughout the region. She also highlighted efforts involving American energy dominance and economic cooperation in Southeast Europe.

Addressing the reports directly, Guilfoyle said, “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity.” She added, “I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.” Her statement said her gratitude and respect for Trump and Rubio remained unwavering, while expressing pride in the work completed during her tenure.

Guilfoyle’s resignation followed a fast-moving sequence of public reports, the White House announcement that she had been asked to step down, legal explanations, and denials. In her statement, she maintained her support for Trump and Rubio while defending her record and reputation.
