Pelosi Denies Knowledge as Swalwell Fallout Grows

Nancy Pelosi was asked a simple question on CSPAN. Did she or other Democrats know about Eric Swalwell’s behavior ahead of time? She answered flatly. Pelosi said it was “absolutely not true.”

The exchange in the clip is short and tense. The interviewer presses. Pelosi replies, “Absolutely not true.” When asked, “You had no idea?” she answered, “None whatsoever.”

That denial comes after Rep. Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor. ABC 7 reported the suspension and published Swalwell’s statement: “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made – but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

The ABC 7 piece also noted that criticism and chatter about Swalwell have circulated in Washington for years. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told ABC’s This Week: “Every member in Congress knows not to let any young staffer around Swalwell or Matt Gaetz, it’s not a secret there,” McCarthy said.

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown added that the accusations did not come as a surprise. He said, “No, I’m not surprised frankly because there have been rumors after rumors after rumors, his colleague in Washington pretty much said that. That’s what Adam Schiff said, that’s what Nancy Pelosi said,” Brown said.

That creates a clash. Pelosi insists she and other Democrats had no advance knowledge. Others say whispers and warnings were common. The public now has to weigh the competing claims.
