Democratic Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed on Fox News Sunday that local Democrats, who are resisting President Donald Trump’s deportation initiatives targeting criminal illegal migrants, should instead collaborate with the administration’s efforts.
Historically, with Trump’s stringent enforcement measures at the southern border and against illegal migrants within the country, Democratic local leaders—particularly in sanctuary cities—have indicated they would not lend their support to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during their operations. On Fox News Sunday, host Shannon Bream questioned Fetterman about this resistance, asking whether local officials have a duty to assist the federal government with deportations.
Fetterman commented, “I hope every local official would agree that anyone here—any of the migrants that are here with criminal backgrounds or engaging in criminal behavior—I think they should support that. Now if ICE comes to round them up, I hope they would provide that kind of support.”
Shortly after taking office, Trump enacted a series of executive orders to tackle the border crisis. This included declaring a national emergency at the border and identifying the cartels as terrorist organizations. Furthermore, the president annulled policies from former President Joe Biden’s administration that had enabled ICE agents to apprehend “criminal aliens,” encompassing individuals guilty of severe offenses like rape and murder.
Fetterman further clarified his stance, stating, “I certainly would never support terrorizing otherwise innocent migrants in those kinds of situations or kicking in a door at a school. But I think we can all agree that every migrant here with a criminal background or engaging in criminal behavior all needs to go.”
In contrast, Democrats such as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have openly criticized Trump’s deportation strategy since it was proposed in November. Mayor Johnson recently asserted that despite the high financial burden on taxpayers, Chicago would persist in defending civil and human rights while welcoming individuals and families seeking to work, reside, and flourish in the city.
Nevertheless, both border czar Tom Homan and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem have cautioned about the possible consequences for those challenging the federal government’s directives. Noem, during a recent appearance on Fox News, emphasized that federal agents would persist in conducting operations in cities, despite facing opposition.
She remarked, “The reality is, these sanctuary cities, their laws have caused us problems. They are limiting some of our tools that we want in our toolbox, but we’re going to continue to go in and use our operations and then show in other cities how it’s working and tell our story to the American people.”
Here’s the thing, I’m not sold on Fetterman. It’ll take a little more than flip-flopping on issues to stand on the right side of history to me. I do believe that people can and do change and that if any presidency was going to turn a hardcore Dem like Fetterman into a patriot—It was the hot garbage that was the Biden administration.
He’s proven to be tough. He’s recovering very well from that stroke last year.
However, I am still at the ‘wait and see’ stage with this guy. What do you think? Is he about to flip or is he just another flop? Let me know in the comments below.
