In a dramatic show of opposition, hundreds, if not thousands, of demonstrators took to Los Angeles’s Highway 101, waving Mexican flags in protest against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. This scene, captured on video and broadcast by KTLA, unfolded on Sunday. As the crowds swelled, the California Highway Patrol found it necessary to close down the freeway, preventing any vehicles from entering the tumultuous stretch of road.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) described the protests as “non-permitted” in a post on X, noting that they were causing significant traffic congestion. The disturbances were not limited to the highway; they spilled onto the surface streets of downtown Los Angeles, compounding the gridlock, as reported by the LAPD.
The demonstrations started near a historic Mexican market, a culturally significant area in downtown Los Angeles, following a call to action organized and spread through social media platforms, according to KTLA. Protesters were seen carrying signs with slogans such as “The real criminal is in the White House” and “Jesus said ‘Love Thy Neighbor,’” reflecting their deep-seated frustration and moral appeals against the administration’s immigration stance.

Notably, as traffic was redirected and sections of the highway were closed off, law enforcement appeared scarce on the scene. This lack of police presence allowed protesters to effectively take control of the freeway, surrounding drivers in their vehicles, as reported by Fox News’s Bill Melugin.

The catalyst for these demonstrations was a series of executive actions taken by President Trump on immigration. On his first day in office, he signed several orders that significantly altered the country’s immigration landscape. These actions empowered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to expedite the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Additionally, they repealed many of the protective measures that were implemented during the Biden administration, which had included broad applications of parole.

This protest highlights the polarized views surrounding immigration policy in the United States. For many of the demonstrators, the policies represent not just a political disagreement but a moral issue, with implications for communities across the nation.

On one side you have the protestors trying desperately to uphold Biden’s ideologies. On the other hand, there are Americans who want to see controlled and orderly immigration. No matter where you land on the issue, entering the US illegally is a crime. The same would go for any other country around the world. With good reason.
I would also argue that blocking traffic is not a form of peaceful protest. It’s restricting everyday Americans’ right to travel and is borderline unlawful detainment—In my opinion.
