Shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, Leaves Three Children and One Adult Dead; 16-Year-Old Suspect Also Killed

A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left three children—ages 5, 8 and 11—and one adult dead, according to the latest update. The 16-year-old male suspect also died.

The incident was reported Thursday afternoon. Bend police said there was a large law enforcement presence at the school and urged people to avoid the area while officers responded.

In an earlier update, Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller said at a news conference that at least two people had been taken to St. Charles Medical Center and that “the victims include children.” The total number of victims was not immediately clear at that point, and the conditions of those transported were unknown.

Police said a Good Samaritan bystander fatally shot the suspect. A post cited in the report said the suspect was found dead inside the school. It also alleged that he began shooting into a vehicle before entering the building, but authorities had not confirmed that detail.

Another CBS News report said students were injured, victims were transported to a local hospital and multiple people had died. The victims’ conditions were not immediately available.

Oregon Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley said in a statement that his team was monitoring the situation at Silver Rail Elementary School. “As details continue to come out, my heart is with the Bend community and all of the students and families affected,” he said. “No one should have to fear violence at school.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said FBI Portland was on the scene assisting local law enforcement. The report remained under development, and authorities had not released the full circumstances or total number of victims.
