WATCH: Brooklyn Bridge Bursts Into Flames During Macy’s Fireworks Show

New York City’s Fourth of July fireworks show took a scary turn when the Brooklyn Bridge caught fire in multiple places during the Macy’s display.

The pyrotechnic event was part of the city’s America 250 Independence Day celebrations. It also marked the 50th anniversary of Macy’s annual fireworks show. Fireworks were launched from barges in the East River and from the Brooklyn Bridge itself.

That last part is now getting plenty of attention.

Videos posted online showed flames on sections of the historic bridge while fireworks were still exploding above the water. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from at least one burning area as spectators watched from nearby viewing spots.

The show drew large crowds to Brooklyn Bridge Park and other waterfront locations. Many people had their phones out already, so the fire was captured from several angles in real time.

Some clips showed what appeared to be more than one ignition point. In other footage, emergency lights flashed while responders in high-visibility gear moved toward the flames and sprayed water on the burning areas.

According to the early reports, the fires were small and were put out quickly after FDNY crews arrived. No injuries have been reported so far.

Still, the scene was jarring. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in the country and is more than 140 years old. Seeing smoke and flames coming from it during a major public event raised immediate questions about planning and safety.

At this point, the exact cause of the fires has not been confirmed. It is also not yet clear whether the bridge suffered any lasting damage.

City officials have not released a detailed public update on the condition of the structure or what may have gone wrong during the display. For now, the videos are doing most of the talking.
