CNN has issued a clarification after an on-air exchange appeared to suggest that President Donald Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting could affect U.S. military members serving overseas.

The issue came up during Friday’s edition of The Situation Room, when anchor Wolf Blitzer interviewed Democratic Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger. The discussion focused on a lawsuit Virginia filed with other blue states seeking to block Trump’s March executive order, which aimed to curb mail-in voting. A federal judge issued a 14-day temporary restraining order against the policy last week.

Spanberger argued that the administration’s actions could discourage voters and interfere with a secure way to cast ballots. Blitzer then raised the issue of military personnel and overseas voters. Spanberger responded by pointing to service members, diplomats, and intelligence personnel who receive ballots while stationed around the world.

“It’s members of the military service, of our diplomatic service, intelligence services, people serving overseas in service to our country who get their ballots mailed to them at the various postings throughout the world.”

But the impression created during the exchange was not accurate. At the end of Monday’s program, Blitzer offered what he called a “quick note of clarification” about his earlier comments.

“We discussed legal challenges to the Trump administration’s directives for the Postal Service on mail-in voting. A comment I made suggested that U.S. military and overseas voters’ ballots would be impacted by these directives. I want to be clear right now: those ballots are exempt from the Postal Service’s new rules implementing the president’s March executive order,” Blitzer told viewers.

That clarification makes the key point clear: military and overseas voters are exempt from the Postal Service rules tied to Trump’s executive order. The correction came after the original interview had already aired, rather than during the discussion with Spanberger.

The exchange and Blitzer’s follow-up clarification were captured in a video shared online.

The episode is another example of why political claims should be checked immediately, especially when they involve military voters. CNN ultimately corrected the impression, but viewers first heard the suggestion that troops overseas could be affected by the new rules. That claim was later walked back by the network’s own anchor.
