Hot Mic Audio Catches Dan Osborn Dismissing Rural Trump Voters as People Whose Lives Probably Suck

Dan Osborn is running as an independent in Nebraska’s Senate race, but leaked audio shared by the Republican National Committee is putting his treatment of rural Trump voters at center stage.

The report describes Osborn as running just behind Republican incumbent Pete Ricketts in the polls. He has promoted his background as an industrial mechanic, Navy veteran, and union leader. He also tried a similar approach two years ago, when he ran against Senator Deb Fischer and came up just over six points short.

Democrats are not running a candidate in the Nebraska Senate race, according to the report. The source frames Osborn as the candidate Democrats are pushing while he presents himself as an independent outsider. The leaked audio, however, gives Republicans a direct look at how he talks about some of the voters he wants to represent.

The Republican National Committee shared the recording on September 16, 2026. In it, Osborn discusses a rural Trump supporter he calls Billy Bob and describes the appeal of President Trump’s message in deeply insulting terms.

His words were:

“Billy Bob is f**king Red Cloud, Nebraska, who lives next to the f**king Trump store as you pull into town and is waving the Trump flag. All he knows is that he is on the winning team,” Osborn says.

“It really is that simple, it is. And Trump…That’s why he’s been so effective,” he continues.

“He’s been so effective at taking Billy Bob and his wife, Mary Jane, or Mary Jo, and telling them, ‘Look, we’re winning. You’re on the winning team.’
“And that’s all they care about, because their lives probably suck so f**king (much).”

In the recording, Osborn portrays rural Trump voters as people who can be won over with a simple message because, in his words, their lives probably suck. That is a sharp contrast with the blue-collar, independent image he has built around his campaign.

The clip was circulated by RNC Research on X.

Osborn was later asked directly whether he was the person speaking in the recording. His answer was brief:

BASH: “Just to confirm, is that you saying that?”
OSBORN: “It sure sounds like me.”

That response does not erase the remarks from the public record. Instead, it acknowledges that the voice sounds like Osborn while leaving voters to judge the comments for themselves.

RNC Research shared that follow-up exchange as well.

Ricketts responded on X, saying the comments showed a lack of respect for rural Nebraskans. He argued that the recording exposed a gap between Osborn’s public image and the remarks captured in the recording.

“Dan Osborn was caught making derogatory comments about rural Nebraskans in another leaked audio,” he wrote.

“Dan Osborn continues to show us who he really is. His comments show a clear lack of respect for the Nebraskans who make this state great.”

“I will continue standing up and delivering for every Nebraskan in every part of this state.”

The RNC and Ricketts are using the clips to challenge Osborn’s blue-collar, independent campaign pitch and argue that the recorded comments reveal how he views rural Trump voters.
