Leftists Flee Trump’s America, Then Europe’s Progressive Dream Delivers a Brutal Reality Check
For years, some American liberals have imagined Europe as an enlightened escape from life in the United States. Online posts often paint the continent as a place with free healthcare, excellent transportation, and rich culture.
But several Americans who actually made the move are now describing a far more complicated reality. A Wired report spoke with people who relocated to the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Their experiences included lower salaries, difficult bureaucracy, career setbacks, culture shock, and a feeling that they would never be fully accepted.
One woman identified as “Annie” was drawn to the United Kingdom after seeing Americans on TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit praise life in British suburbs. She was especially attracted to the promise of “free” healthcare, “excellent” transportation, and the country’s “rich” culture.
The reality was not what she expected. Annie moved to Britain while pregnant with her first child and said her experience with the National Health Service’s maternity care fell short of her expectations. She also encountered lower salaries and less disposable income. Common American appliances, including dishwashers and dryers, were considered luxury items in the UK.
As Annie put it, “There are huge misconceptions about access to quality health care, standard of living … the quality of life is significantly lower than in the US.”
She also said the anti-American sentiment she encountered came as a shock. “I found it particularly surprising how people feel so comfortable mocking my accent and culture, even in a workplace environment,” she said. Her view of British culture also changed. “The UK is very much a place of ‘it is what it is,’ but as Americans we are taught to always improve and strive for better things.”
Annie and her husband now have an exit plan. They want to return to the United States, but their employers will not allow them to relocate until the following summer.
Kate Glavan, a leftist influencer from New York, had a different problem after moving to London in late 2024 following Trump’s election. Her work depended on brand partnerships, but companies were less interested because she was reaching a much smaller British audience. She ultimately returned to New York earlier this year.
Another American, Josh, moved to Berlin in 2023 because he feared Trump would win the following year’s election. He had lived in Germany before, spoke German, and already had friends there. Even with those advantages, finding work proved difficult, and navigating German bureaucracy became a major source of frustration.
Josh also found Germans less friendly than Americans and said he never felt fully accepted. “Finding work was so hard, and the endless bureaucracy had grown worse since I’d left,” he said. He added, “I missed the friendlier people, freedom of speech, and ease of daily life” in the United States. He also said that people who are not born and raised in Germany and do not look German will never be fully accepted.
Nick, an art director from New York, moved to Poland with his wife, who is from the country. His decision was partly motivated by disgust with what he described as “right-wing populism” in America. But he experienced culture shock after arriving as well.
“What is happening in the US is also happening everywhere now, to the point I’m even a little hesitant in what I say to you, or anywhere online,” Nick said.
These stories do not mean every American will have the same experience overseas. They do show that political slogans and social media fantasies cannot replace a realistic look at wages, healthcare, career opportunities, bureaucracy, cultural attitudes, and everyday life.
For these Americans, leaving Trump’s America did not produce the easy paradise they expected. Instead, the move forced them to confront problems they believed they were escaping, along with a new set of challenges they had not anticipated.
