New Poll Shows Schumer’s Support Crashing
A fresh Marist Poll has bad news for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. His approval in New York hit a career low.
Only 27% of registered voters say Schumer is doing an excellent or good job. That breaks down to 8% excellent and 19% good. Meanwhile, 65% say his performance is fair or poor. That includes 24% who call it fair and 41% who call it poor.
The drop is notable. Last year his approval was 34%. This is the lowest score recorded since Marist began tracking his numbers in 1999.
The mood shifted across party lines. Among Democrats, negative views ticked up to 50% from 46% the prior year. But the biggest move came from Republicans. Now 84% of Republicans rate him fair or poor, up from 69% before. Non-enrolled voters are also more negative, rising to 65% from 62%.
Those shifts suggest frustration that goes beyond usual partisan splits. Observers point to Schumer’s long tenure in the Senate and his prominent leadership role in Washington. Long careers can bring scrutiny—and higher expectations.
Political analysts note that leadership ratings can swing fast. A string of headlines, legislative fights, or high-profile votes can change public views quickly. For a leader with decades in office, both record and style matter.
Some commentators are calling this a turning point. Others say it’s part of normal political ebb and flow. Either way, the numbers are clear. Schumer’s approval is at its lowest level in the Marist series.
Expect this poll to fuel more conversation in New York and in national circles. Supporters will point to Schumer’s accomplishments and experience. Critics will use the results to argue for new direction.
