Virginia Democrat Louise Lucas Responds to Federal Charges in Alleged Corruption Scheme
Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas has issued a defiant response after federal authorities charged her in an alleged public corruption scheme tied to a cannabis business she co-owns. A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed that Lucas turned herself in and was arrested.
The charges include racketeering, money laundering conspiracy, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, and gun possession. According to the indictment, members of the alleged conspiracy used multiple business entities to disguise proceeds from illegal marijuana distribution. Prosecutors also claim Lucas “used her political position in the Virginia state senate to insulate” the enterprise “from criminal scrutiny, to further the goal of wealth accumulation.”
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin reported that members of Lucas’s family were also arrested and charged by the Department of Justice.
After her arrest, Lucas released a statement responding to the charges:
“Today, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the full weight of the FBI have been wielded against an 82-year-old grandmother.”
“I grew up under Jim Crow. I’ve seen what happens when people in power try to silence those standing up to them. I spent my life fighting back, and I’m not going to stop now.”
“I’m not new to this. I’m true to this.”
“I will not be intimidated. I will not be bullied. And I will not back down.”
Lucas’s statement focused on her age and personal history, while the indictment lays out allegations involving the cannabis business, marijuana proceeds, and her Senate position. According to reports cited in the source, the investigation began during the Biden administration.
Earlier reporting also cited an intercepted phone call from February 2026 involving Lucas and an unindicted co-conspirator. According to NBC News, Lucas allegedly called the opportunity their “last chance at generational wealth” and added, “I’ve gotten too old to not be greedy.”
The indictment contains allegations, and the charges will be addressed through the legal process. But the federal case, the arrests of family members, and the reported phone call have placed Lucas under significant legal and political pressure.
