MLB Warns Giants Pitchers After Bible Verses Appear on Pride Caps
Three San Francisco Giants pitchers ran into trouble with Major League Baseball after writing Bible verses on special Pride Night caps during Friday’s game at the Chicago Cubs’ stadium.
Starting pitcher Landen Roupp had “Gen 9:12-16” written next to the Giants logo on his hat. Reliever JT Brubaker used “Genesis 9:13-15,” and Ryan Walker added a similar reference on the side of his cap. Another pitcher, Sam Hentges, did not wear the Pride hat at all.
After the game, Roupp said the verse was meant to reflect his faith. He told reporters he wore it to share “God’s covenant and the promise that He makes to us” and “His faithfulness and His mercy.”
“It’s just something I believe in, and I stand firm in that. Thankfully, we live in a country where we have the freedom to believe what we want,” he said.
Giants manager Tony Vitello backed the players, saying they “have the freedom to do what they think is best,” according to the Athletic.
MLB later issued a warning and said the move broke uniform rules. “The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations,” the league said. MLB also said the warning was “not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,” adding that “writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball’s uniform regulations.”
The dispute also spilled onto social media. Vice President JD Vance responded on X, writing, “Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore”
