Texas Democrat Caught Pushing Vegan Climate Plan

A clip from 2022 has popped back up. It shows James Talarico wearing a mask and pitching veganism as a climate solution. The video landed this week and won’t be going away before Election Day.

In the footage, Talarico talks about animal welfare and says cutting meat is critical to stopping climate change. He doesn’t hedge. He goes full non-meat on his campaign.

“We have, I think, heard more and more of issues of animal welfare,” Talarico said. “I think not just because it’s the right thing to do and the moral thing to do, but it’s also—as all of you know—necessary to fight climate change.”

“It is now existential that we try to reduce our meat consumption and that we try to respect animals in all aspects of society,” Talarico continued. “I am proud to say that our campaign has officially become a non-meat campaign…we are only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses.”

Short and direct. That messaging might play in coastal liberal bubbles. But it’s a strange fit for a statewide Texas Senate bid. Voters here care about jobs, energy, the border, and personal freedom. Not being able to eat a burger is a hard sell.

Republicans and conservative commentators are already using the clip to paint Talarico as out of touch. The resurfaced footage feeds a larger narrative: a Democrat whose priorities don’t match mainstream Texas values.

This isn’t the first time old clips have dogged a candidate. Campaigns live and die on soundbites now. Opponents will run this one nonstop.

If you want to watch the original post that helped the clip spread, here are the embeds that circulated with the resurfaced video.

Expect this to be a recurring line in the campaign. Whether it hurts Talarico depends on how well he ties his platform to Texas priorities—and how much voters care about a candidate’s past livestreams.
