Amazon Cargo Plane Bursts Into Flames After Runway Overrun—Five Dead, Multiple Injured

An Amazon Boeing 767 cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon and burst into flames. The aircraft had departed from Puerto Rico and crashed while landing at the Miami airport around 2 p.m. ET.

The plane also hit vehicles, triggering a ground stop and a major emergency response. An update reported that at least five people were dead and multiple others were injured. The available account did not identify whether the fatalities included crew members, passengers, or people on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as 21 Air Flight 7598.

“21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. local time on Sunday, Sept. 6. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico,” the FAA said.

“The FAA will investigate. Contact the airline for additional information,” the Federal Aviation Administration said.

FAA officials said the agency would investigate the crash. The Air Traffic Control System Command Center issued a ground stop while emergency crews responded.

All runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport were closed after the aircraft went off the runway. Officials initially had not released details about injuries or fatalities as the response continued.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the aircraft. Social media posts shared footage from multiple angles, showing the Prime Air Boeing 767 on fire near the airport runway.

One video post described the aircraft as overrunning runway 30 at Miami International Airport. The situation remained under investigation, and the airport disruption continued as crews worked at the scene.

Further reports said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were responding to the disabled cargo jet at the northwest end of the airport. The developing incident involved both the aircraft fire and vehicles struck during the runway overrun.

Authorities had not yet released a full account of what caused the plane to leave the runway. Additional information was expected as investigators examined the landing, the aircraft, and the surrounding area.
