Alexandria Tells Residents to Call 311 Over Fireworks, Even Sparklers

Alexandria, Virginia is drawing attention for a July 4 message that is rubbing plenty of people the wrong way. The city is telling residents that fireworks are illegal inside city limits, and that rule includes sparklers. Instead of lighting them up, the city wants people to call 311 and report violations.

That message landed just as Americans across the country were getting ready for the holiday weekend. Alexandria says it will hold its own fireworks celebration later, on July 11, but the city is not making an exception for the Fourth of July itself.

On X, the city posted: “Fireworks are illegal in Alexandria, including sparklers. Report illegal fireworks by calling 311. Our show is next weekend,”

The Alexandria Fire Department also reminded residents what is at stake. “Any fireworks found inside the City can be taken away. If you are caught with fireworks, you could face a Class 1 misdemeanor charge. That means up to one year in jail, a $2,500 fine or both,” the department said in a press release.

The city, which has more than 150,000 residents, says its own fireworks event will take place at Oronoco Bay Park. The official celebration is being billed as a safe, legal alternative, with music and a fireworks show planned for Saturday, July 11.

“Join us at the City Birthday celebration on Saturday, July 11, for a safe, legal fireworks show. There are also displays in cities and counties across the National Capital Region. Many are visible from Alexandria’s waterfront on the 4th of July,” the fire department’s release added.

That approach did not sit well with everyone. One response was blunt: “Get bent”

A third reaction took aim at the sparklers ban itself: “I know NOVA is full of stupid policies, but sparklers are illegal? What kind of unpatriotic crap is that? NOVA really is just the worst kind of government policies.”

Whatever side people take, the reaction shows how fast a simple holiday rule can turn into a public backlash. Americans tend to take a dim view of government lecturing them on how to celebrate the Fourth. And telling people to snitch on neighbors over sparklers is not exactly a great way to win them over.
