WATCH: Bill Maher Slams “Powers That Be” Over Handling of COVID-19 Pandemic

Bill Maher took aim at the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic on his show “Real Talk with Bill Maher,” stating that the “powers that be” were wrong about many aspects of the crisis. He pointed out that certain measures, like school closures and lockdown policies, were accepted as the “conventional” way to handle the pandemic, but in retrospect, were not effective and caused more harm than good.

Maher expressed frustration with the excuse of not knowing enough about the virus at the beginning of the pandemic, stating that it has been four years, and it is time to stop using that as an excuse. He argued that some people predicted the consequences of specific decisions better than others, and those who got it wrong need to acknowledge their mistakes now.

One example he gave was the prolonged closure of schools, which he deemed as pointless and causing more damage to children. He criticized those who pushed for these policies and highlighted the collateral damage it caused to children’s education and mental health.

The comedian also pointed out how certain ideas about the origin of the virus were discredited as conspiracy theories at the time, but have now been proven to be true. For instance, the theory that COVID-19 originated in a lab in Wuhan, China, was dismissed by many as a conspiracy theory owned by Steve Bannon. However, with the Biden administration now admitting at least a 50-50 chance of the virus starting in the lab, Maher questioned the lack of retractions and acknowledgments of these dissenting opinions.

Maher also brought up the fact that the Biden administration shut down a State Department inquiry into the lab leak theory in spring 2021, further highlighting the suppression and dismissal of alternative ideas.

In light of these shortcomings and mistakes, Maher called for the creation of a “COVID commission” to examine the handling of the pandemic. He questioned why such a commission has not been formed yet, given the numerous past examples of commissions being formed to investigate various issues.

The comedian concluded that the lack of a COVID commission highlights the reluctance of the “powers that be” to admit their mistakes and failures. He highlighted the numerous commissions formed in the past for various issues, from the Warren Commission to the 9/11 Commission, and the NFL’s commission on the effects of head injuries on players. Maher sarcastically quipped, “Is ramming your head into another guy’s head bad for heads?” to emphasize the absurdity of the lack of a COVID commission.

Maher’s criticism and call for a COVID commission shed light on the mishandling and suppression of dissenting opinions during the pandemic. He argued that it is crucial to acknowledge and learn from mistakes to prevent similar failures in the future.
