Judge Blocks Trump Kennedy Center Name Change
A federal judge has thrown a wrench into the Trump administration’s plans for the Kennedy Center. On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Christopher R. Cooper ruled that the center cannot officially use Trump’s name and cannot shut down completely for the planned renovation period.
The ruling goes straight to the heart of the dispute. Cooper said the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees went too far when it voted to rename the building and attach Trump’s name to it. His view was simple: Congress named the Center, and only Congress can change it.
That matters because the facility was renamed in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy after his assassination. Cooper said Congress made the name clear and took steps to make sure no other memorial-style dedication would be added to the public spaces. In his words, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”
The judge also rejected the board’s move to close the center for two years of renovations. The board had voted in March to shut it down after America’s 250th birthday celebrations in July. Cooper said the repairs could be handled without forcing a full closure.
The dispute has been building for months. Trump had taken a hands-on role in the center’s leadership, naming himself chairman before appointing former U.S. ambassador Ric Grenell as interim chair. Supporters of the overhaul say the building needed serious work after years of neglect. They point to low fundraising and a long list of maintenance problems.
Trump has made no secret of wanting to put his stamp on the project. He has talked about turning the Kennedy Center into a major showcase and restoring it as part of a broader push to improve Washington, D.C. But after the ruling, his reaction was blunt. A post shared through Rapid Response 47 said Trump had “no interest” in the renovation after the judge’s decision.
More than one social post followed the ruling, and the fight quickly spilled into public view.

For now, the order leaves the Kennedy Center in a messy spot. The name change is blocked. The full shutdown is blocked. And the renovation fight is now heading into another round of legal and political back-and-forth.
