Soldier Video Sparks Outrage in Lebanon

A video showing a soldier damaging a statue of Jesus during operations in southern Lebanon has triggered a fresh wave of criticism online. The footage spread quickly, and the Israel Defense Forces later said the image was real and tied to a soldier serving in the area.

The video showed a soldier using a hammer against a statue of Jesus Christ on a cross. Once the clip started circulating, the IDF said it was looking into whether the image was authentic. After an initial review, the military said the scene did appear to show one of its soldiers operating in southern Lebanon.

That led to a more formal response from the army. The IDF said the conduct did not match the standards expected from its troops and that the matter would be handled through the chain of command. It also said the Northern Command was reviewing the case and that further steps would be taken based on the findings.

Along with the investigation, the IDF said it was trying to help restore the statue to its place. The army also stressed that its current operation in southern Lebanon is aimed at dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure and that it does not intend to damage civilian property, including religious sites or symbols.

The incident lands in a sensitive spot. Damage to a Christian symbol can spark a strong reaction, especially when the images are tied to military activity in a conflict zone. For many viewers, the optics alone are enough to raise serious questions about discipline and judgment.

The controversy also comes after another religious access dispute in Jerusalem during Easter weekend. Catholic officials had an issue with police after entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was blocked over fears of Iranian attacks. That situation was later worked out after meetings involving church officials, law enforcement, and political leaders.

One post tied to that earlier dispute said the Latin Patriarch was being given access after being turned away because of missile concerns. The episode showed how quickly religious sites can become flashpoints when security threats and military pressure collide.

For now, the IDF says the Lebanon incident is still being reviewed. The bigger issue is simple: when a military claims discipline and restraint, moments like this get noticed fast. And once they hit social media, the backlash does not stay small for long.
